Why does the Chinese government suppress civil rights lawyers?

Crackdown on civil rights lawyers in mainland China is becoming more and more serious. It has come to the situation that the government applies triad and gangster-style measures to suppress them. The Chinese government and those who benefit from the “economic boom” simply ignores the rule of law. As a result, laws are not implemented and courts have not played their roles to deliver justice. When shall we Chinese people be able to have a just and harmonious society?

Spiritual reflection_6December2006

Have been very busy with work and voluntary work at the Justice and Peace Commission recently. Have learnt a lot. I was lucky to have the chance to speak at St. Andrew’s Church last Sunday. Thanks to the excellent preparation work done by the staff at Justice and Peace Commission, the speech was very well received. The topic was about globalisation and the poor with reference to the commercialisation of Christmas. Due to globalisation, the problem of uneven distribution of wealth is becoming worse. The wealth gap between the rich and the poor has been further widened. I was so happy that a sister at the parish came to me after the mass liturgy on that day and asked me if she could use the text of my speech for the parish’s newsletter. I felt very much honoured by God’s grace to have given me the opportunity to speak for the poor at a parish with socially-minded people. Let us pray for the poor as Christmas is coming!

Why can the PRC government support fake elections?

Since the People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, like other religions, the Catholic Church in China has been under control of the PRC government. As a result, “religious groups” like the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association were set up. On the surface, these groups seem to emphasize the participation of ordinary people, but in fact, their leaders are officials of the Communist Party. What they do are always related to their political interests.

This year, the Chinese official church has ordained several Catholic bishops without the approval of the Vatican. It even claimed that the bishops were elected democratically. Every time after the ordination, the Chinese Foreign Ministry always said that the Vatican should not interfere with China’s internal affairs. It just shows how political are the ordinations of the government-appointed bishops. The most recent bishop ordination in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, even involved deceiving and pressuring two bishops from Hebei province to attend the ordination ceremony.

As a member of the Catholic Church, I feel outraged about these actions taken by the Chinese Catholic Association and the State Administration of Religious Affairs. Is praying for them the only thing we can do for our fellow Catholics in mainland China? A Hong Kong priest who I respect very much once told me that it is better for us not to report about the situation of the Catholic Church in China, saying that it can’t help the church people in China and it would only be portrayed as confrontational to the Chinese government. So, does it mean that we should be silent about the plight of our fellow Catholics in China? Can silence help them?
